Solar panels and your EPC label: what impact do they have?

28 May 2026 5 min read

Solar panels are one of the most visible investments in an energy-efficient home. But how much do they count towards your EPC score? And what should you do to have them counted correctly? In this article we lay it out.

How do solar panels affect the EPC?

The EPC expresses the calculated energy consumption in kWh/m² per year. Solar panels generate renewable energy and therefore lower the net energy consumption included in the calculation. The more of your own energy you generate, the lower the score and the better the label.

How much can your label improve?

The exact gain depends on the capacity of the installation, the orientation of the roof and the size of your home. A solid installation can move your home half a label class to a full label class forward. Combined with good insulation, that often makes the difference between label C and label B.

What does the energy expert need?

Solar panels are only counted favourably if their presence and capacity can be proven. So keep the following documents ready:

  • The AREI inspection report of the installation
  • The purchase and installation invoices
  • The capacity of the panels (in kWp) and the inverter details
  • The commissioning date

Without proof, the energy expert cannot count the installation or can only count it partially, which means you miss out on a favourable score.

Solar panels alone are not enough

Solar panels are a strong asset, but the EPC looks at the full picture. A well-insulated roof, high-performance glazing and an efficient heating system carry at least as much weight. So also take a look at our tips to improve your EPC score.
